Ukrainians and Volunteers Give Eurovision Screening ‘Douze Points’

Posted: 16th May 2023

Over 100 members of the Ukrainian community in the Capital, alongside volunteers, attended a special screening of the live Eurovision Song Contest Final at Edinburgh’s City Chambers on Saturday (13 May).

Council Leader Cammy Day welcomed guests with a moving speech and then turned hosting duties over to Graham Norton and the team in Liverpool at the live show broadcast.

Speaking at the event, Councillor Cammy Day said:

“The Eurovision Song Contest is so much more than a musical competition. As well as being incredible entertainment, Eurovision is a celebration of culture, diversity and unity and I was delighted to be able to host this special screening for our Ukrainian community and the volunteers who support them.

“It was a great evening of fun celebration and we cheered on both the UK and Ukrainian entries in the contest. Prizes were given for best interpretation of the Eurovision theme.

“I remain hugely proud of the efforts by colleagues, partners, residents, and businesses in welcoming Ukrainians making their new home here in the capital. We must continue to recognise the extraordinary sacrifice made by the Ukrainian people and reiterate our continuing solidarity with all Ukrainians.

“Since the start of the war against Ukraine, volunteers in Edinburgh have been giving their time to help. So it was great to welcome them to this event too. I hope all enjoyed the night as we celebrated what unites us and it gave us another opportunity to show our support for Ukraine.”
