Gillespie Macandrew donates record £51,000 to its charity partners

Posted: 6th December 2024

Scottish law firm Gillespie Macandrew has recently donated a record £51,000 to charity as part of its annual commitment to its charity partners, in alignment with the firm’s active ESG strategy.  This donation to the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (ECHC) and Alzheimer Scotland represents one of the largest acts of charitable giving by an independent Scottish law firm this year and demonstrates the scale of its wider programme of engagement with charities over the past four years, thanks to the volunteering and fundraising collaborations by colleagues of the firm.

The firm began its partnership with ECHC and Alzheimer Scotland in 2020 after both charities were nominated and chosen by staff. Gillespie Macandrew’s overall financial contributions to these two charities over the last 4 years now totals to a staggering £177,000.

The firm donates a percentage of its annual pre-tax profits to charity each year, and this record amount follows strong results in the year to February 2024 across each of the firm’s four core sectors, Land & Rural Business, Energy, Private Client and Commercial Real Estate, with turnover reaching £17.7m.

Gillespie Macandrew’s commitment to supporting charitable causes is a key element of its overall ESG programme, having donated more than £300,000 to Scottish charities over the past eight years.

Rae Gilchrist, Legal Director and Chair of Gillespie Macandrew’s Charity Committee said:

“We believe that we have a responsibility to support the great work being done by local charities and we are committed to our focus on social responsibility.  In the past four years, we have supported Alzheimer’s Scotland and ECHC, not only through fundraising and donations, but also practically during volunteering days. This includes being Christmas Elves at the Children’s hospital, decorating the hospital for various occasions, such as to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NHS, and rejuvenating the gardens at the Calareidh respite care centre, just to name a few.”

“We are immensely proud to have played a part in supporting the invaluable work being done by both charities with this year’s donation and the relationship we built with them over the past four years.”

Roslyn Neely, CEO of Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity, commented: “We are enormously grateful to Gillespie Macandrew for continuing to support seriously ill children and their families in hospital with this incredibly generous donation. This will make a huge impact on so many young lives.”

“We work tirelessly all year round to give children and their families the extra support they need when facing a life-changing hospital visit, but we can currently only reach 1 in 10 children who come through the doors. Donations like this from wonderful supporters like Gillespie Macandrew get us one step closer to reaching every child who needs us. Thank you.”

Kirsty Stewart, Executive Lead for Fundraising & Engagement at Alzheimer Scotland added: “Alzheimer Scotland is thrilled to receive an incredible donation of £25,500, from Gillespie Macandrew. We are deeply grateful for the continuous support Gillespie Macandrew has provided over the years.  Alzheimer Scotland relies heavily on fundraised money, and every penny raised helps us continue to support our vital network of Dementia Advisors, Resource Centres, and our 24-hour Freephone Dementia Helpline (0808 808 3000). These services are crucial for people living with dementia, their families, friends, and carers. Gillespie Macandrew’s ongoing generosity has helped us continue to deliver these essential services. This donation helps us to Prevent Today, Care Now, and Cure Tomorrow. Thank you.”

Gillespie Macandrew has offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Perth, advising clients on all areas of land and rural business, private client, commercial real estate, renewable energy, tax and disputes, combining a personal approach with industry-leading expertise.
