Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with Bauer Academy to offer an exceptional corporate event for all members on 11th – 12th March 2015.

This two day executive event will cover a range of topics but will fundamentally explain how businesses increasingly need to function more like the media.  Presented by experts from Sky, Bauer Media, BBC, ITV, Independent and Herald, this course offers practical exercises that develop key media and communication skills, build confidence to work closer with the media, and how to use these skills and transfer them into everyday business life.

With the landscape of media changing daily, this unique 2 day course looks at how to adapt to these changes – Bauer Academy will provide practical examples and case studies to illustrate how best to communicate key business messages in an ever evolving media world. The course will demonstrate that knowledge and understanding of the media is crucial for everyone – it can no longer be reserved for those purely working in the industry.

This course is suitable for all media facing personnel, senior executives; public and political figures and internal media teams but equally the skills learnt are key transferable communication skills suitable for all walks of life.

The location of Archerfield has been chosen as it boasts many inspirational locations on the estate, none other than the Marine Villa, where story has it that Robert Louis Stevenson was inspired to write Treasure Island whilst staying there.

Omnisafe LogoLocal business OmniSafe Limited has been awarded accreditation from Safecontractor for its commitment to achieving excellence in health and safety.

Safecontractor is a leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises very high standards in health and safety management amongst UK contractors.

OmniSafe Limited is principally involved in the Health and Safety sector, specialising in Electrical Safety, Inspection Testing and Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) Services.  OmniSafe’s most recent clients have included major players such as The Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, The Trump Turnberry Resort, Morrison Bowmore Distillers and Church of Scotland.

The company’s application for Safecontractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business.

Emma Burnett, OmniSafe’s Business Development Manager, quoted ‘We pride ourself on our abillity to continually maintain the highest level of health and safety standards.  This is one of the fundamental reasons that our customers appoint OmniSafe as their trusted safety testing contractor”

“Over the years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of reports of health and safety failures and incidents.  Here at OmniSafe, we value the safety of all our cleints, their staff and their customers.  Our thorough and detailed testing by our highly qualified electricians, along with our Safecontractor safety accreditation, gives our customers that extra peace of mind that they are fully complying with current health and safety legislation.”

Safecontractor accreditation will enhance the company’s ability to attract new contracts and its commitment to safety will be viewed positively by its insurers when the company liability policy is up for renewal.

Safecontractor is applicable to most sectors although it is particularly relevant to food manufacture, property, facilities management, retail and leisure sectors, all of which are big users of contracted services.

John Kinge, technical director of Safecontractor said, “Major organisations simply cannot afford to run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies in place.”

“More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that OmniSafe has done. The firm’s high standard has set an example which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector.

Safecontractor plays a vital role in supporting our clients in meeting their compliance needs, whilst working with their contractors as they progress through the accreditation process.”

Under the Safecontractor scheme, businesses undergo a vetting process which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website.

Client-organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database, enabling them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. These clients agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation.

Over 210 major, nation-wide businesses, from several key sectors, have signed up to use the scheme when selecting contractors for services such as building, cleaning, maintenance, refurbishment or electrical and mechanical work.

What a year for Scotland and Scotland’s Capital City. As we continue to punch above our weight in an increasingly competitive and complex global market, we need to step back from any internal city competition and all join forces to create a truly world famous Capital City. Our Country, our Capital City.

Our Capital is home to our government whose new powers provide new opportunities. Our transport and digital connectivity both within Scotland and internationally, go from strength to strength, blurring the edges of traditional geographical boundaries. We also continue to develop stronger relationships with many international governments, complementing UK and European government activities which has resulted in the number of Consular offices growing in our Capital City.

Edinburgh provides a natural gateway to nurture and grow our international partnerships which complements developments right across Scotland. Not only does this help facilitate inward investment, the growing Consular base continues to support the strong growth in international education and extend the global reach of our arts and culture. It is no coincidence that we continue to experience the growth in status of Capital Cities across the world, particularly in the emerging economies, as this is a key benchmark in the status and profile of any country.

We have, across Scotland, enjoyed one of our highest global profiles as a country this year which we must try to harness as much as possible in 2015. This includes taking joint ownership in the future to market our Capital City and aligning scarce government resources to promote Edinburgh more effectively in a highly fragmented media market place. Our tourism sector has demonstrated how it can manage a unique event in one location and ensure economic benefit is distributed more widely across the country. The same effect can be delivered with a step change in marketing our Capital City, with greater alignment and coordination across several government agencies already making a difference.

Within Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, the New Year will see the launch of the Capital City Ambassador program, providing the business community across Scotland with an opportunity to engage and support their Capital. This will include working closely with government at all levels, agreeing formal partnerships with several foreign governments already based in the Capital City and working closely with many other institutions who have the same strategic intent.

As global TV audiences welcome in 2015 across the world, following Capital City time zones, they will eventually reach Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh. Of course it says goodbye to a very famous year in Scotland’s recent history but it also reminds everyone across the world that Scotland is not only here to stay and grow, but also knows how to party!
