Edinburgh Airport has chosen Erskine as its corporate charity partner for 2015 after a vote by airport staff. Erskine is one of the leading care organisations for veterans in Scotland and since 1916 has provided unrivalled nursing, respite and dementia care for ex-service men and women with their five care homes in Scotland.

Each year, Scotland’s busiest airport works with different charities, raising funds and awareness of various organisations. In 2014, the airport worked with Scottish Autism and Unicef, raising over £10,000 during the course of the year. David Wilson, Chief Operating Officer at Edinburgh Airport, and ex-serviceman, said: “We’re delighted to announce that Erskine will be our corporate charity of the year in 2015. “Being an ex-serviceman myself, Erskine is a charity very close to my heart. With numerous fundraising activities and corporate events throughout the year, we’re sure we can raise a lot of money for this very worthy charity.“As an airport we’re committed to supporting our local community and in 2006 we established our Community Board to contribute to local projects and initiatives. Each year we award approximately £100,000 in funding to various worthy causes.”

Shona Langlands, Erskine Community Fundraiser for the East, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as the charity partner for Edinburgh Airport in 2015. “Together we are working on some great fundraising ideas and our veterans, particularly those in our Edinburgh home in Gilmerton, are really excited. “This partnership will not only raise much needed funds for Erskine but raise awareness of the vital work we do caring for veterans in Scotland.”

Commenting on the Chancellor’s Budget Statement, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said:

“This Budget is one of significant contrasts for businesses in Scotland.  There is some very good news for some of our key industries such as the oil and gas sector and our drinks industry, yet there are also some significant omissions and missed opportunities to deliver timely support to our tourism sector and our ambitions to become a more export-minded economy.  It is clear that our economy as a whole has made significant progress from the dark days of the recession and there is a strong pro-business focus from this Budget but action on VAT on tourism and Air Passenger Duty would have been necessary for us to provide a resounding endorsement.”

Mrs Cameron went on to comment on specific aspects of the Budget:

On oil and gas taxation:

“The Chancellor has responded positively to our calls on behalf of the industry and cut the Supplementary Charge from 30% to 20% and has delivered wider benefits by cutting the rate of Petroleum Revenue Tax from 50% to 35%, which will relieve the tax burden on older fields.  These measures were necessary to reflect the challenges facing the oil and gas sector in Scotland resulting from the prolonged low oil prices.  Together with a simplification of the tax allowance regime, this must be the start of a process to develop a strong and coherent fiscal plan for the North Sea that will help to ensure that Scotland and the UK continues to benefit from our natural resources in the long term.”

On annual investment allowances:

“It is welcome news that annual investment allowances will not revert to £25,000 in 2016, as had been feared.  This is important at a time when businesses are still in the early stages of returning to a platform of investment that is necessary to sustain our economic recovery and should give businesses the confidence to invest over the coming year and beyond.  It would have been better for the Chancellor to have indicated the level of allowance that will instead apply in 2016 but we will look for further clarity on this in the Autumn Statement.”

On City Deals:

“The Chancellor confirmed that discussions would begin on City Deals for both Aberdeen and Inverness.  We believe that these cities are prime candidates for this type of long term capital investment and we look forward to swift progress and delivery.”

On Self-Assessment Tax Returns:

“The abolition of the annual self-assessment tax return and its replacement with new digital tax accounts could herald a welcome simplification on the administrative burden felt by many small businesses.  If teething troubles can be avoided, this could be a major improvement and modernisation of the system.”

On Alcohol Duty:

“The reduction in duty on beer, cider, whisky and other spirits is a very welcome boost to some of Scotland’s strongest growing and most innovative businesses and sends out a clear message that we value the contribution that these businesses make to our economy.  In addition to the established whisky industry, Scotland is at the forefront of the rapidly expanding craft beer sector and these duty reductions will help these industries to prosper.”

On Air Passenger Duty:

“This was a missed opportunity for the Chancellor to shortcut the impending demise of this tax through a series of devolved cuts by axing it once and for all.  Many of our competitor nations have already abolished similar taxes because they recognise that it a tax on internationalising business.  The UK must abolish this tax sooner rather than later and this is a campaign we will take to our politicians throughout the General Election campaign.”

On VAT on Tourism:

“Scottish Chambers of Commerce has long believed that a reduction in the rate of VAT chargeable on accommodation, tourist attraction admission and restaurant services to 5% is essential if we are to compete effectively with other European nations which have already gone down this route.  Last year was a triumphant year for Scotland’s tourism industry and it deserves to be supported to ensure that it can make the most of the opportunities that now exist.  It is very disappointing that the UK Government has not yet acted upon this need and it essential that it changes direction on this quickly if we are to take full advantage of the exceptional potential for growth that currently exists in our tourism sector.”

ActivityMix, the active employee engagement company, is today encouraging Edinburgh’s businesses to ‘take their marks’ as it launches its services to the corporate sector, challenging them to drive dynamic leadership through sports participation.

The inter-company sporting events and tailored staff engagement programmes offered by the firm aim to build more productive businesses by establishing a strategic framework for better communication, respect, leadership, achievement, engagement and enjoyment in a corporate environment, long-term.

Rick Johnston, Founder of ActivityMix comments: “Having shaped many success stories in Aberdeen, it was a natural progression for us to adapt our unique offering for another city. According to the Centre for International Competitiveness, Edinburgh is a perfect fit – being the most competitive large city in the UK.

At ActivityMix, we have come to recognise the importance of putting people first in an organisation. Where employees were previously driven by bonuses and benefits, we are now witnessing a shift in what motivates and engages the workforce. Individuals now have an increased desire to improve themselves and take control of their own direction. Sport is a great vehicle to do this, while also driving employee engagement, motivation, reward, staff retention and increasing development.”

Jules Lancastle, fellow founder of ActivityMix continues: “As we scratch the surface, many organisations are realising that inter-company events are also becoming a key tool for the identification of potential business leaders of the future. Others are joining such initiatives for a range of reasons; to increase communication among different employee groups, as a tool to break down hierarchical barriers, a strategy for the retention of staff and even as a positive brand building exercise.

PHG Bank of Scotland (beach) - (l-r) Nathan Teague, Graham Dunlop, Marc ...

Edinburgh based residential property developer, PHG Developments Scot Ltd, has seen the first residents move into its new Portobello development this month, as phase one of the project nears completion having secured a £4.1 million finance package from Bank of Scotland.

This follows the launch of the Lloyds Banking Group Commission on Housing report, which set put a roadmap towards the sustained supply of good quality new homes and calls for a progressively rising target for national house-building to deliver 2 million to 2.5 million homes by 2025. The new £8 million residential development, situated on the site of the old funfair ground, is also part funded by PHG Developments.

Having demolished the existing site which has lain derelict for over seven years, the first phase of the build  will comprise of 39 state-of-the-art apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms, increasing to a total of 55 following phase two at a further cost of £3 million.

All of the apartments in the development, which currently sits four metres from the beach front, were sold by the end of November during the pre-sale, having been released early due to overwhelming demand following over 200 notes of interest.

Commenting on the progress of the development Marc Teague, Director of PHG Developments and project lead for the Portobello development said, “We are extremely pleased with what we have been able to achieve with what was previously a disused and unsightly waste ground.

The site has now been reinvigorated and we have also turned it into a quality focal point for the local area by extending and repaving the adjacent section of the promenade for local residents, adding street lighting and restoring the area around two Historic Scotland preserved pottery kilns as part of the application for the site.”

Graham Dunlop, SME Banking, Property Team Relationship Director at Bank of Scotland added, “As the third development we have supported Marc and his team with in recent years, the Portobello development is on track to be yet another success. With a waiting list of potential buyers already in place, momentum for phase two is building.”

Airline students show their industry potential by lifting Silver Quaich

THREE high-flying students from Edinburgh Napier University underlined their business know-how by running up colossal profits at the helm of their own airline. Emily Boubert, Caeleigh Drummond and Declan Lowry won the Silver Quaich in the second annual Airline-Online competition at the university’s Craiglockhart campus. Staff from Edinburgh Airport, including Chief Executive Gordon Dewar, joined 15 Tourism and Airline third year students in a battle of business strategy on airline simulation software.

Five teams, each consisting of three students and one airport professional, had to lead their airlines through two years of operations. They had to compete for routes, schedule flights, decide on aircraft size, adjust prices and react to changes in the commercial climate. After a tense contest on simulation software the students will become more familiar with on their final year airline management course, the winning team clinched victory in the final round. Zooming Air – comprising the three victorious students and airport route analyst Pavel Halas – ran up total profits of $300million, pipping rivals Zippy Air by only a couple of million.

Emily, Caeleigh and Declan were presented with the Silver Quaich, donated by Edinburgh Airport, at an awards lunch. Dr Shuna Marr, Undergraduate Programme Leader for Tourism at Edinburgh Napier University, said: “Airline-Online software allows students to develop a strategic understanding of airline management and to explore the factors that affect airline profitability. It helps them develop problem solving and critical thinking skills and learn how to convert their business strategy into effective tactics.

“It was a really fun way to build up our relationship with the airport. The second annual contest was even more exciting than the first, with the teams competing neck and neck most of the way.”

Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “We’ve developed a close relationship with Edinburgh Napier University over the last few years and are delighted to have the opportunity to help grow the Airline-Online Challenge. This challenge is vital for Tourism and Airline students as it gives them the opportunity to learn about the various aspects of airline management, from researching and introducing new routes to buying and selling assets. Edinburgh Airport works closely with various organisations and we encourage our teams to volunteer their time for different causes. We’re looking forward to many more chances to pit our knowledge and experience against students who could possibly be the next generation of aviation executives.”
