Final call for applications as key deadlines for the General Election approach

Posted: 18th June 2024

Residents are being urged to register to vote and make sure any applications for postal or proxy votes are in this week.

For new voter registration the deadline is tomorrow (Tuesday 18 June) at midnight. The deadline for a new postal or postal proxy vote – and any changes to existing postal votes – is 5pm on Wednesday 19 June.

The deadline for applying for a new proxy vote (where you nominate someone to vote on your behalf) is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.

Detailed advice on registering to vote, the use of postal and proxy votes and more is available on the Council’s website.

This is the first UK General Election where voters must show a form of photo identification (ID) to cast their ballot. A list of approved forms of ID and information on how to obtain a free Voter Authority Certificate are also available on the website. The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate to vote in the 2024 General Election is 5pm on Wednesday 26 June.

The Council’s website has a full list of candidates standing in Edinburgh’s five parliamentary constituencies.

Returning Officer for Edinburgh, Paul Lawrence said:

“This week marks several crucial milestones as our city prepares for polling day.

“We want everyone to be able to exercise their democratic right to cast their vote in this General Election. I’d urge anyone in Edinburgh who is eligible to make the necessary arrangements as soon as possible before these upcoming deadlines.

“Our colleagues are working hard to ensure this election runs smoothly and efficiently for the people of the Capital, and they have my sincere thanks.”
