SP ENERGY NETWORKS TEAMS UP WITH FEDERATION OF WINDOW CLEANERS TO SHARE TOP SAFETY TIPS

Posted: 6th December 2024

Electricity network operator SP Energy Networks has teamed up with the Federation of Window Cleaners to share vital safety messages on the potential dangers of working near overhead power lines and practical tips on how to stay safe when going about day-to-day window-cleaning duties.

The Federation – which has been around for almost 80 years – is committed to enhancing safety standards across the window-cleaning industry, which has seen a number of serious injuries and even fatal electrocutions in recent years.

With many window cleaners either working at height, or using extendable cleaning equipment, the partnership offers the perfect opportunity to promote safe working practices and expert advice about how to get the job done safely when working near electricity network infrastructure.

Steve Kennedy, Executive Committee Member at Federation of Window Cleaners, said: “As a dedicated professional in the window cleaning industry, there is nothing more important than working safely, and we can all do our bit to help minimise risk and prevent the devastating incidents and tragic loss of life we’ve seen in recent years.

“That’s why this collaboration with SP Energy Networks is so vital. Our collective mission is to protect window cleaners and promote a safer working environment for everyone by sharing these straightforward and practical safety guidelines.”

SP Energy Networks’ top tips are:

  • Always Look out. Look up! before starting work. Take the time to look for any overhead power lines or electrical installations.
  • Keep a safe distance from overhead power lines. The recommended minimum distance is usually 3 meters (about 10 feet), but always check for local regulations and guidelines.
  • Know the size of your equipment and do not operate if this breaches safety distances to overhead cables.
  • Avoid working in poor conditions, such as rain or high winds, as these can increase the risk of accidents involving electrical infrastructure.
  • Plan your work in advance, considering the location of power lines and electrical equipment. Identify any potential hazards and make a strategy to avoid them.
  • Stay alert to any changes or maintenance work being carried out by SP Energy Networks that might affect your working area.
  • Report any damage to power lines or electrical equipment immediately to SP Energy Networks or the relevant network operator.
  • Get trained on working safely around electricity, understanding the risks and how to mitigate them is crucial for your safety. Federation of Window Cleaners offers an ‘IOSH Cleaning Windows Safely’ accreditation, which includes practical information on how to clean windows safely following current Health and Safety regulations
  • Keep the national 105 electrical emergency helplinenumber saved in your phone. If anyone is injured, please call 999 immediately for medical attention.

Derek Bell, Health and Safety Director at SP Energy Networks, said: “At SP Energy Networks, we’re dedicated to collaborating with industry bodies and specialist trades like window cleaners who are the most likely to  work near the miles and miles of overhead lines across our network.

“It’s fantastic to have Steve and the Federation of Window Cleaners on board to help amplify these vital messages and make sure they reach the right people before they set foot on a  ladder or lift an extendable pole. Even one incident is one too many and we’re committed to ensuring this partnership makes a lasting and positive difference – not just within the window-cleaning industry, but across all the communities we serve.”
